EV charger installation
Most of the work happens at the switchboard.
Mounting a charger on a wall takes an afternoon. Working out whether an inner north house from 1925 can actually carry another dedicated circuit is the part that decides the price, and it is the part worth doing before you buy anything.
What the job involves
From the meter box to the car.
Charger installation is one job with several parts, and how many of them apply to your place is what makes one quote different from another.
Where the car parks, where the board is, and what sits between the two. Ten minutes of this decides most of the cost, so it happens before anything is quoted.
02 Supply and switchboard checkWhether the existing supply can carry a charger, and whether the board has a spare way and the right protection. This is where older houses need work first.
03 Dedicated circuitA charger runs at close to full load for hours at a time, so it gets its own circuit with its own protection. It never shares with anything else.
04 Charger mount and commissioningUnit mounted, wired, tested and commissioned, including connecting it to your wi-fi and app where the charger has one.
05 Three-phase installsWhere a property already has three-phase, or where adding it is worthwhile. Faster charging, and usually the sensible option if the supply is already there.
06 Load managementWhere the supply cannot comfortably carry a charger at full tilt alongside everything else, the charger is set up to back off rather than trip the house.
07 Solar and battery integrationWe do the switchboard and supply side that solar and battery systems depend on, and work alongside your solar installer rather than through you.
08 Apartments and shared parkingPossible in many buildings, with a second set of approvals. Whose supply the charger runs from is the question that has to be answered first.
Why two quotes can differ by thousands
It is the distance and the board.
The charger costs what the charger costs. Everything else is site specific, and there are really only a handful of variables.
How far the cable has to run from the board to where the car sits. Whether that route is open or has to go under a floor, through a wall or under a driveway. Whether the existing board has a spare way. And whether the supply into the property can carry another sustained load at all.
A garage next to the meter box on a house with a modern board is a straightforward day. A carport at the back of a long block on a house with ceramic fuses is a different job, and we would rather show you why than hand you a number.
- Cable run length and route
- Spare ways on the existing board
- Single phase or three phase supply
- Whether a board upgrade comes first
- Surface, underground or under-floor run
- Wall type where the charger mounts
- Load management hardware, if needed
- Certificate of electrical safety

Switchboard upgrades
The most common precondition. If the board has to change, it is better to know before the charger is ordered.

Electrician Coburg
Inner north housing stock and why boards here so often need attention first.
Worth knowing first
The decisions people ask us about.
Nearly everyone getting their first charger asks the same five or six things, so here they are written down.
Do you actually need a charger at all?
Not necessarily on day one. Every electric car comes with a lead that plugs into an ordinary power point, and for someone driving short distances that can genuinely be enough. It is slow, and the point it plugs into should be checked rather than assumed, because a socket carrying a car overnight is being asked for far more than it was ever used for.
Where a dedicated charger earns its money is regular driving, a car that needs a real top-up every night, or wanting to charge from your own solar during the day. If you are not sure which you are, say so on the phone and we will tell you honestly.
Single phase or three phase
Most inner north houses are single phase, and a single phase charger is what goes in. It will comfortably refill a normal day's driving overnight, which is what matters far more than a headline charging speed.
If a property already has three-phase supply, a three-phase charger is worth considering because the extra speed costs almost nothing to take advantage of. Adding three phase purely to charge a car is rarely worth it, and we will say so rather than sell you the upgrade.
Load management, and what it is for
Older properties often have a supply that will not comfortably carry a car charging at full rate while the oven, the heat pump and the air conditioning are all running. Load management solves that in software rather than with a supply upgrade: the charger monitors the rest of the house and eases off when everything else is busy.
In practice you rarely notice, because the car is charging for eight hours and only needs a few of them.
Charging from solar
If you already have solar, a charger that can follow your export is worth asking about. It charges when the panels are producing more than the house is using, which is the cheapest energy you will ever put into a car. It works best for people who are home during the day or who can leave the car plugged in on weekends.
We handle the board and supply side of this and coordinate with whoever installed your solar.
Apartments and shared car parks
Harder, not impossible. The questions are whose electricity the charger draws on, whether the run crosses common property, and what the owners corporation requires. Buildings vary enormously, so this is a site visit rather than a phone quote.
Rebates
Rebate and incentive programs for chargers and home batteries change regularly, and the conditions change with them. Check what is current before you commit rather than relying on something you read last year, and check whether it requires the installation to be done a particular way.
Which charger to buy
We install what you have bought, and we are happy to tell you what we see holding up well. What matters more than the brand is whether the unit suits your car and your supply, and whether you actually want the app.
How it works
Four steps, no mystery.
Most installs are one visit. The exceptions are the ones where the board has to change first.
Send a photo of your board
A photo of the switchboard and one of where the car parks tells us most of what we need before anyone drives anywhere.
Site visit and price
We look at the supply, the board and the cable route, then give you a written price with any board work priced separately rather than buried.
Install
Dedicated circuit run, charger mounted and wired, and any board work done at the same visit where it can be.
Test, commission, certify
Tested, commissioned with your car, connected to the app if it has one, and a certificate of electrical safety issued.

Common questions
Before you ring.
If yours is not here, ask on the phone. It is quicker than typing it out.
How long does an EV charger installation take?
A straightforward install is most of a day. If the switchboard has to be upgraded first, that is a separate piece of work and you will know about it before we start rather than on the day.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade?
Sometimes. It depends on whether there is a spare way, whether there is safety switch protection, and what the board is. On older inner north boards it is common, which is why we check before quoting the charger.
Can I just use the plug that came with the car?
You can, and for low mileage it may be all you need. Get the point it is plugged into checked first, because an ordinary socket carrying a car for hours every night is doing something it was not really installed for.
Will it trip the house?
Not if it is installed properly. It gets its own circuit with its own protection, and where the supply is tight we set up load management so the charger backs off instead of the house tripping.
Can you install a charger in an apartment car park?
Often, yes. It needs a site visit and usually owners corporation approval, because the answer depends on whose supply it runs from and whether the cable crosses common property.
Do you install any brand?
Yes. We install what you have bought, and we will tell you honestly whether it suits your supply before you buy it if you ask first.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. Every install gets a certificate of electrical safety, and it is not an extra charge. Licence REC 35681.
Which areas do you cover?
The inner north for everything, and we take charger installs across the northern and eastern suburbs.

- Electrician Fitzroy
- Electrician Northcote
Preston and Northcote are the easiest suburbs for home charging because most houses have off-street parking. Fitzroy and the terrace streets of Brunswick are the ones worth a site visit before you commit.
Not sure whether you are in range? Ring and ask. It is a thirty second phone call and we will tell you straight either way.
